Pin-Ups by Earl MacPherson - Artist's Sketch Pad

  


Earl MacPherson joined the staff of Brown and Bigelow the calendar publishers in 1942 and then went on to create his signature Artist's Sketch Pad Calendar in 1943. The drawings featured a main image and smaller sketches of the same model, showing the work that went into creating the main image including preliminary sketches and alternate views.  More biographical information at The Pinup Files.

In 1952 he created a similar calendar for  Shaw-Barton titled Studio Secrets the Earl MacPherson Sketchbook for 1952. This one sold on the website Hake's Americana and Collectibles.

He was an accomplished photographer who often worked from his photographs of models. and example is shown at The Art of The Pin Up.

Vilhelm Hammershøi - Figure Paintings

Vilhelm Hammershøi was born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1864. He died in 1916. His paintings are admired for their understated domestic themes and muted tones. He also painted some figures. Those are shown here.
He has been the subject of a revival in the last decade with exhibitions in many European cities.

Cliff Young - Figure Drawing Without a Model

Figure Drawing Without a Model by Cliff Young was published in 1946 by Art for All which also published books by Charles X. Carlson and Arthur Zaidenberg.

Cliff Young was a member of the Society of Illustrators in New York. He studied at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, the Grand Central School of Art , the Art Institute of Chicago the National Academy of Design, Carnegie Institute and the Art Students League of New York.

The figure modeled in top light, how to construct a head, clothing and drapery on the figure.

He lectured at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Central Park School in New York and the Grand Central School of Art in New York and worked as a story and advertising illustrator.
During World War II he and Steve Brodie illustrated the Green Arrow for DC Comics.

Like many other self employed artists of the time he produced this figure drawing book and another titled Drawing Drapery from Head to Toe. Figure Drawing Without a Model is out of print and hard to find but still under copyright. I would like to republish it but don't know how to contact the copyright holders, if anyone knows how to I would like to hear about it.
