Prints from a very rare volume, Cabinet de l'art de sculpture, par le fameux sculpteur Francis van Bossuit. Executé en ivoire, ou ebouché en terre, gravées d'apres les desseins de Barent Graat, par Mattys Pool", Amsterdam 1727.

Francis Van Bossuit was a sculptor from Brussels. He was born in 1635 in Brussels and died in 1692 in Amsterdam. After studying in Brussels, he achieved mastery in Antwerp. He specialized in carving ivory. Around in the mid 1600's, he went to Italy.  He settled for many years in Rome where he produced numerous copies of antique statues. He returned to Amsterdam where he remained until his death in 1692.

Jan de Bisschop Figure Engravings

Jan de Bisschop was a lawyer by training he practiced in the Hague in the mid 1600s and later started a drawing academy there.

He made numerous drawings of classical antiquities and eventually published two books to preserve the knowledge of the antique for a younger generation. The books were Paradigmata graphices variorum artificum Voor-beelden der teken-konst van verscheyde Meesters and Signorum Veterum Icones.

The prints pictured are from one or the other of the books and are for sale on
Ebay.

Bartolomeo Pinelli's Engravings of Dante's Inferno, Paradisio, and Purgatorio

There is a complete 3 volume set of of Bartolomeo Pinelli's Engravings of Dante's Inferno, Paradisio, and Purgatorio published in 1826 for sale on Ebay.

He was an unusually prolific artist, printmaker, painter, sculptor and draughtsman, issuing works on Italian costume, and contemporary and ancient Roman people, customs and monuments. 

He learned sculpture from his father and his works generally emphasized naturalness over the prevailing neo-clasical style of the time.

He studied at Accademia di San Luca in Rome and at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Bologna and was helped financially by  Pope Benedict XIV's nephew but turned his back on the traditional path of religious and history painting and sold his works to the public in cafes.

Most copies of this work are in library or museum collections, others have been taken apart and sold as individual prints.

How to Draw a Hand

These engravings showing how to draw a hand are also from The Art of Figure Drawing by Thomas H. Maguire. Notice the radius line in the top line drawing indicating the alignment of the knuckles with the joint of the thumb.

This book follows the same convention that A Treatise on Muscular Action does in presenting an outline engraving plus a fully rendered engraving. (See more illustratings from A Treatise on Muscular Action here).

The ability to produce such beautifully engraved books must have influenced the artist and publisher to show what they were capable of.
