How to Draw a Volume Study of the Human Figure - Life Drawing

A volume study of the human figure is used in life drawing or figure drawing to help see the forms of the figure. The figure is broken down into geometrical components to help determine the posture and action of the figure. The shapes are based on the common geometrical shapes, and positioned according to the perspective of the figure. The sketch above is based on a figure from G.M. Ellwood and F.R.Yerbury's Studies of the Human Figure. The model is the same Dorothy Lees who modeled for Adolphe Armand Braun's Hieroglyphic or Greek Method of Life Drawing.

Cliff Young - Figure Drawing Without a Model

Figure Drawing Without a Model by Cliff Young was published in 1946 by Art for All which also published books by Charles X. Carlson and Arthur Zaidenberg.

Cliff Young was a member of the Society of Illustrators in New York. He studied at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, the Grand Central School of Art , the Art Institute of Chicago the National Academy of Design, Carnegie Institute and the Art Students League of New York.

The figure modeled in top light, how to construct a head, clothing and drapery on the figure.

He lectured at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Central Park School in New York and the Grand Central School of Art in New York and worked as a story and advertising illustrator.

During World War II he and Steve Brodie illustrated the Green Arrow for DC Comics.

Like many other self employed artists of the time he produced this figure drawing book and another titled Drawing Drapery from Head to Toe. Figure Drawing Without a Model is out of print and hard to find but still under copyright. I would like to republish it but don't know how to contact the copyright holders, if anyone knows how to I would like to hear about it.
