Henri Avelot -1922 Cartoon from La Vie Parisienne

Another humorous cartoon about art and artists from La Vie Parisienne.

This time a lazy artist neglects to prepare for the Autumn Salon. He has an idea. He puts a frame around a window and poses his model outside and hopes his near sighted benefactor will like it. Unfortunately the patron criticizes his choice of models and the insulted model leaps through the window to defend herself.

Here is a mid twentieth century version of the same idea.

The drawing is titled "Un Chef d'Oeuvre - d'Ingeniosite pour le Salon d'aAutumne" which translates as a masterpiece - ingenuity for the salon of Autumn

Ella Hergesheimer - Figure Studies

 Ella Hergesheimer figure studies drawn in the first decade of the 20th century.

Here's a biography from the ebay page on which it is for sale: "Ms. Hergeshelmer was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania in 1873 and died in Nashville, Tennessee in 1943. She was a pupil of William Merritt Chase and Cecilia Beaux from 1900-1904. She won several national and international awards. Her works are in the collection of Vanderbilt University; Heckscher Museum in Huntington, NY; Reading Public Museum and Art Galley in Pennsylvania; Tennessee State Museum, and the Morris Museum of Art in Augusta, Georgia."

An article title "Some Portraits by Ella S. Hergesheimer" appeared in The International Studio Vol. 37 Miss Hergesheimer has fulfilled the promise made five years ago when she was awarded the scholarship for European study and travel at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia. A student in that Academy four years she won the prizes offered by the Academy Schools in perspective, landscape, anatomy, figure and animal painting, having previously been a student for two years in the Philadelphia School of Design. Added interest is attached to her work by the fact that she is the great-great granddaughter of Charles Wilson Peale, one of the founders of the Academy. Working as she has for four years under the inspiration of two such masters as William M. Chase and Cecelia Beaux her work is technically strong and truthful, and beneath and beyond the mere technical skill lies her own personality, the subtle charm of a nature singularly sound and sweet. Studying in the galleries of Europe for three years she found her greatest inspiration in the paintings of Velazquez in the Prado. After exhibiting for several years in the Paris Salon she has returned to America, where her work in the exhibitions here has received favorable comment.

The Society sought to bridge the gap between ancients and moderns. a description of the Society is in Dilettanti: the antic and the antique in eighteenth-century England By Bruce Redford, J. Paul Getty Museum, Getty Research Institute. A copy of the original book sold for £580 in 2010. Thirteen are listed in Libraries around the world.
