Alberti Cherubino - Figurative Engravings

This is a 1577 engraving from Alberti Cherubino (1553-1615) an italian Artist and Printmaker. The website of Spaightwood Galleries, quoting from the The Grove Dictionary of Art notes that he studied in Rome"... with Cornelius Cort, whose swelling burin line he adopted to create pictorial effects of strong chiaroscuro."

And after 1575 "...During the next ten years he reached the height of his fame as a printmaker, producing engravings after Raphael, Michelangelo, Polidoro da Caravaggio and of ancient statues. His prints of Polidoro are particularly valued as documents of lost works."

Modelling, by Ed. Lanteri is now available as an ebook. The book has 157 illustrations including 38 photographs of work in progress.  It has clear descriptions of techniques and methods of sculpting which are accompanied by the illustrations.  Lanteri was a professor of sculpture at the Royal College of Art in South Kensington, Great Britain. 

Here is a description from the preface:

"IT would be difficult to overrate the value and excellence of this work. Had such a book been obtainable when I was in the twenties, I would not have rested a moment until I possessed a copy, and when possessed of it, it would have been my constant companion. professor Lanteri has put in very comprehensive language everything that is needful for the young sculptor to know.

"The result of the careful thought and observation of years is here set forth in a manner so clear that it may appear to some readers that after learning Professor Lanteri's book by heart, they will then know how to model. A careful study of this work will show that the author does not hold out any such vain hope.

Kuwagata Keisai (Kitao Masayoshi) - Human Proportions, Actions and Sketches

This book or woodblock prints by Kuwagata Keisai (Kitao Masayoshi) was published in 1795 in Tokyo. It shows figures in all kinds of actions and has a chart of human proportion at the beginning. it is titled Ryakuga Shiki or Simplified Forms of Drawing or Rough Sketches or Admiring the Spirit and Form of Nature.

According to various sources Hokusai was greatly influenced by his work.

Very rare. a copy is for sale on Ebay. Search for the book Riaku Gwa Shik on Ebay.

This book was published in 1902. It contains Figure Representations for artists and craftspersons. The images of people are modeled after Hellenistic representation which was generally agreed at the time to be the highest form of proportional beauty, There are many representations of movement, life and action, plus anatomical plates of the proportional form of humans.

Le Pitture Antiche D'Ercolano

Le Pitture Antiche D'Ercolano was produced over the years 1757 to 1771 in Naples and illustrated the art works found in the excavations of Herculaneum which had been buried since 62 A.D. but revealed as the result of several earthquakes.

Herculaneum (Ercolano) was buried at the same time as Pompei, it was a more affluent town than Pompei, which explains the interest in its artworks.
